I can still remember my surprise when I learned that Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother was the result of prior, less formally successful images. It always struck me as so supernaturally compact, solitary, and instantaneous. I should have known better perhaps, but like all fantastic magic, an icon is best performed as a trick, with its secrets still undercover.
